Promote Science, Technology, Engineering,
and Math (STEM) as a Living STEM-Historian

Barry Thacker, PE, portrayed Welsh miner/engineer David R. Thomas of Coal Creek, Tennessee, during this presentation to the East Tennessee Geological Society on 14 May 2016.  It’s a way to inspire students to pursue careers in STEM by teaching history in the classroom as the STEM-professional who made that history.  Examples include geologists John Wesley Powell and Florence Bascom, as well as engineers Emily Warren Roebling, Herbert Hoover, and Elijah McCoy (i.e. the original Real McCoy).

Feedback from Dr. Eirug Davies of Harvard University:  The Welsh miners who came to Coal Creek after the Civil War were experts in coal geology. They used their knowledge of coal geology to determine where to strike a coal face in order to achieve maximum results.

Dr. Davies sent the link at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFnra54Yk44 to explain, which is an interview of Richard Burton by Dick Cavett.  Burton came from a coal village in Wales.
