“Punishment and Society”

Barry Thacker PE and Carol Moore were invited by Zhandarka Kurtinew Ph.D., the new assistant professor in the department of sociology at the University of Tennessee, to talk about the convict lease system in TN to a group of undergraduate students. She is teaching an advanced course “Punishment and Society” and her students are learning about the convict lease system in the South and Tennessee and specifically about the Coal Creek War. We explained that slavery in Tennessee did not come to an end after the Civil War, it came to an end because of the Coal Creek War!
