What makes Briceville School so special?  Yes, its students are smart—four of the last eight Presidents of United States graduated from Yale University, and Yale’s hospital just recruited a Coal Creek Scholar from Briceville, Kaleasha Welch, to serve in its operating rooms.  But what separates Briceville students from others is the habit instilled in them to say, “Please” and “Thank you.”

That’s what Coal Creek Scholars did in a video produced by Coal Creek Scholar Andy Harness shown at https://youtu.be/Cl8z_UjZLZE.  It’s a wonderful gift to receive during any season, but especially at Christmas.

(PS -- It was also Pajama Day at Briceville School!)

Twelve college students or graduates from Briceville told this year’s fourth and fifth graders the importance of working hard, while focusing on going to college during today’s 15th annual Coal Creek Scholars Day event.

The Coal Creek Scholars program began in 2002 as a dream for an unbroken circle where Briceville students can participate in K-12 community service projects to celebrate their heritage and qualify for college scholarships.  In return, they agree to inspire Briceville fourth and fifth graders to continue that tradition.

The unbroken circle was on display today when Scholars challenged the fourth and fifth graders to follow in their footsteps and go to college.  Our first two scholarship recipients, Amy Dugger Crabtree and Casey Prosise Swindall, told how going to college helped them live the American Dream.  They both got advanced degrees and have managed successful careers while raising their families.

Kyle Leinart told how Amy’s presentation when he was in fifth grade made him realize he, too, could go to college.  As an inventor and entrepreneur, Kyle has come a long way since then as shown at http://www.coalcreekaml.com/KyleKnoxTechSocietyAug2016.htm.

Coal Creek Scholars in attendance are current and future nurses, engineers, doctors, teachers, social workers, scientists, business leaders, as well as medical/computer/artistic specialists.

Scholars in attendance today include Amy Dugger Crabtree, Casey Prosise Swindall, Andy Harness, Kaleasha Welch, Jonathan Sharp, Phillip Smith, Kyle Leinart, Jonathan Towe, Nick Cox, Peyton Jenkins, Chad Whitaker, and Jeffery Housley.

Afterwards, Coal Creek Scholars served as Santa’s helpers in delivering toys to all the good little boys and girls at Briceville School.  Funding for the gifts was provided by staff members of Schnabel Engineering Company’s Knoxville office.
