"A community requires leaders with diverse skills, so whatever career you pursue,
challenge yourself to make a difference.  Getting a college education provides you with
opportunities to succeed in life not available to those with only a high school diploma."

Twelve former Briceville students delivered that message to encourage fourth and fifth graders at Briceville School to follow in their footsteps and go to college.  The Coal Creek Scholars in attendance ranged from a high school senior preparing for college to a therapist with a Masters degree advancing in her career.

They led a panel discussion and took questions about starting early to prepare for college, their choices for college and careers, how they are learning a variety of ways to succeed in college, and what a difference it is making in their lives.

What common trait did the Scholars credit with helping them prepare for college?  Their love of reading opened their eyes to the world and helped set them apart from their peers.

Last Friday, Briceville fourth and fifth graders sang, “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” at Cross Mountain Miners’ Circle to remember those miners on the 100th anniversary of their deaths.  Current and former students are part of another unbroken circle, this one at Briceville School.

We think this is the most valuable day of the year at Briceville School!  Twelve former Briceville School students and Coal Creek Nantglo scholarship winners came together to encourage the 4th and 5th graders at Briceville School to study hard, help their community, and get involved in a variety of activities so they can attend college one day.

After the Scholars Day event, plans were discussed for a new initiative at Briceville School to encourage students to become avid readers.  Patty Bachner from Engineers Leadership Foundation met with Principal Sandra Patton, teachers, staff, and invited guests to explain the “Engineering Better Readers” program.  Also, in attendance were Katrina Oakley from Anderson County Schools and Adria Tutton, an assistant to Congressman Chuck Fleishmann.

Save this date:  Friday, February 10, 2012, at 9:00 am, for the kick-off assembly at Briceville Elementary School for the “Engineering Better Readers” program.
