Bringing Coal Creek
history to life
for teachers in
Chattanooga/
Hamilton County
9 August 2016

Barry Thacker, PE, portrayed Coal Creek miner/engineer David R. Thomas during in-service training for teachers at East Hamilton High School on 9 August 2016 http://www.tnhistoryforkids.org/hamiltontentrevival, which was sponsored by Tennessee History for Kids and Blue Cross/Blue Shield. 

Teachers were also introduced to ways history/social studies can be incorporated into other educational endeavors such as:

Promoting science, technology, engineering, and math as a living STEM-historian,

bullet

Engineering Better Readers,

bullet

Reenactment of historical events by students, and 

bullet

Restoring the American chestnut to the Appalachian Mountains on mined land prepared by the Forestry Reclamation Approach.

 

A few of the teachers who learned the Coal Creek history to teach to their students.  They each received red bandanas in honor
of the Coal Creek miners and two American Chestnut trees to show their students and plant.
