Why did Tennessee Lt. Gov. Randy McNally, State Rep. John Ragan, and Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank take time out of their busy schedules to attend Briceville Elementary School’s Engineering Better Readers Assembly today?  It’s because Briceville students are future leaders of the county, state, and Nation.  Inspiring them to become avid readers is how we prepare them for those future roles.   

Briceville students learned about the EBR program at a kick-off assembly where Paul Revere and his granddaughter Katherine Revere Long time-travelled from the past to give students a lesson on American history.

American history and how fun reading can be

They told stories about some of their heroes from the American Revolution where George Washington was the sword, Thomas Jefferson was the pen, and Patrick Henry was the bugle who sounded the call to freedom.  In his famous speech, Henry said, “Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!”

Briceville teacher Loren Forgety says, “One of my students was struggling last year with reading.  I feared she might have to go to the special education program without improvement, but then we started Engineering Better Readers and she started reading multiple books each night to earn points to buy prizes.  By the end of the school-year she was one of the best readers in my class.”

That’s what we call “Mission Accomplished” in the EBR program!!

Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank inspired us all to read more
and build up our brain muscle!  She explained INTELLECT and KNOWLEDGE --
Just because you don't know something does not mean you are stupid...
It just means you have not learned it yet!!  She also reminded us that God
loves us.  He has a plan for us all and makes no mistakes!


Senator Randy McNally, who just this week became
Tennessee's Leutenant Governor, spoke to the students about how
reading is important in every aspect of our lives...whether it be to
learn how to put together an ATV to reading to become a
Pharmacist (which is what he did!).  The Lt. Governor asked this
young lady what she wanted to be one day and she proclaimed she
wants to be a nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
He explained how being an excellent reader will help her
become that and much more.


State Representative John D. Ragan spoke to the students about his struggles
with his reading skills as a child due to being dyslexic, but he worked hard and
became an engineer, a fighter pilot, and a representative.  He presented a
Tennessee Blue Book to Briceville School for their library
and for all the kids to read.

He's ready to succeed again this year!

After opening the curtain to display the prizes students can earn, first-grade teacher Melissa Fleming explained how the program works.  Students read books and pass comprehension tests, for which they are awarded points.  Students save their points to purchase prizes, which include Xbox, Play Station 4, tablets, Nintendo DS, iPods, Legos Minecraft, scooters, and balls.

Greg Deal and Katrina Oakley joined us from the Anderson County
Schools administrative offices.  During his presentation,
Mr. Deal commended longtime Briceville School
employee Bobby McCoy.


"Paul and Katherine Revere" donated a collection of their favorite books, (i.e., Brave Pilgrims, First Patriots, American Revolution,
Star Spangled Banner, and The Presidency) to Briceville's Principal Travis Hutcheson.
