As part of our Coal Creek Scholars program, we take the students to visit schools that they might be interested in attending. A few of our scholars are interested in learning more about the field of professional engineering as a possible career choice. We took these scholars to visit the University of Tennessee (UT) College of Engineering in Knoxville to get a feel for life as an engineering student at UT. The students were allowed to roam the halls with current engineering students and stick their heads in on a lecture, classrooms and labs.

The scholars visited the lab of Russian-born Dr. Mariya Zhuravleva. She showed us the equipment used to grow crystals as part of new scintillation research, which will provide the foundation for the next generation of gamma-ray, x-ray, and neutron detectors that are used in such technology as CT and PET scans and MRIs. Dr. Zhuravleva was a good example to the Coal Creek students of how there are no limits to what you can do with your life. She was born in Russia, went on to Japan where she received her PhD, and is now a researcher at UT. |
Coal Creek Scholars attending were: Megan Dugger, Kyle Leinart, Ryan Vandergriff, Tyler Vandergriff, and Victoria Wright |
