5th Annual Coal Creek Scholars Day
at Briceville School in Coal Creek
3 January 2007

"If you want to be a millionaire, forget about winning the lottery, get a college education." --- Barry Thacker, PE, President and Volunteer with Coal Creek Watershed Foundation

Coal Creek Scholars served as role models for Briceville Elementary School students today, explaining how going to college can make your dreams come true.  But first, you must work hard in middle school and high school and become involved in community service efforts.

Seven former Briceville students who are now attending college came back to their old school and spoke to the current 4th and 5th graders to tell them about the importance of attending college.  One of the scholars attends Lincoln Memorial University, two attend Carson Newman, one attends University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, two attend Middle Tennessee State University, and our first Coal Creek Scholar Amy Dugger is now in graduate school at the University of Tennessee Knoxville.

The college students told of their experiences not only in their school work, but also their extracurricular activities like joining in clubs and groups for dance, Frisbee, business clubs, bubble-tent clubs, and other fun ways to be social, make new friends, and experience new life adventures.

Also in attendance was Mark Fly, Professor of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries Department at the University of Tennessee.  Professor Fly is a CCWF and Clinch River Trout Unlimited volunteer.  He told the students that he grew up in a a small rural area and has background that is not that different from theirs in many ways.  He urged the students to follow their hearts and try to go into a career that they will enjoy.
