Nantglo Scholarship Competition

The Nantglo Scholarship is offered to graduates of Briceville Elementary School to assist them in attending college.  The scholarship is named in honor of the Welsh coal miners who settled Coal Creek after the Civil War.  Nantglo is Welsh for Coal Creek.

Requirements to be eligible for one of our scholarships are as follows:


Applicants must be graduates of Briceville School in Coal Creek.


Students MUST perform community service projects in the Coal Creek Watershed that are organized or sponsored by the Coal Creek Watershed Foundation.  We offer several opportunities for community service each year.

bulletThe $10,000 is awarded over a four year period. Each year when you register for school, you will provide us a copy of your school’s proof of registration, and we will give you a check for $2,500 until we reach the $10,000 award.
bulletOne of the requirements to continue your scholarship each year is that you MUST visit Briceville School at least once during the school year (usually in December or January) with the other scholarship winners and speak to the Briceville students about your experiences in college and encourage them to study hard, stay in school and get a college education. We also encourage you to continue your community service efforts in Coal Creek.

To qualify for the $10,000 college scholarship, interested high school seniors who graduated from Briceville School prepare an essay on "Improving the Quality of Life in the Coal Creek Watershed"

Essays MUST incorporate the following items into the broader topic of the essay:

--Your aspirations for college
--Your career goals, and
--Your community service efforts including your volunteer work on our Coal Creek Watershed Foundation projects. 

Essays will be submitted before April 15 each year to the Coal Creek Watershed Foundation, Inc., 1101 Craig Rd, Knoxville, TN 37919  Or, you may email your essay to   You must confirm that your essay was received.

The winner will be announced by May 1st.
