BOY SCOUT TROOP 120

MINERS CIRCLE

TOMBSTONE CLEANING DAY

Saturday, September 30, 2000

9:00 am until Noon

WHO:  Volunteers are needed to clean the tombstones and monuments of the miners who died in the 1902 Fraterville Mine Disaster. Eighty-nine of the 184 men and boys who died in the disaster are buried at Miners Circle in Leach Cemetery.

WHAT: The project is part of the Coal Creek Motor Discovery Trail being developed by the Boy Scouts of America and the Coal Creek Watershed Foundation. As part of his Eagle Project, Drew Justice and other volunteers will clean the headstones and monuments so they are legible for visitors. Drew is also developing a map of Miners Circle including historical information about the miners. When completed, copies of the map and documentation will be available for use by visitors.

WHEN: Saturday, September 30, from 9:00 am until noon.

WHERE: Leach Cemetery adjacent to Clear Branch Baptist Church. From Lake City, go south on U.S. Highway 25W. About 1.5 miles south of the intersection with Highway 116, turn left from Highway 25W on Clear Branch Road. Follow the signs to Leach Cemetery.

WHY:    Many tombstones in Miners Circle proclaim "Gone but not forgotten".  Drew and the Scouts of Troop 120 want to validate this claim and they need your help.  Drew is also looking for historical information.  He is hoping that volunteers with information on these men and boys will attend this work day and provide him with  additional historical documentation.

HOW:  Show up at Leach Cemetery and spend 3 hours for a worthy cause.  For additional details, call Carol Moore at 865-584-0344 or visit www.coalcreekaml.com/BoyScoutsLeach.htm on the Internet.
