Coal Creek Health Days
held in Conjunction with USA Today's
Make a Difference Day

CCWF garners award from USA Weekend

Some very famous, generous, smart, and amazing doctors, dentists, lab technicians, nurses, dental hygienists, medical personnel, and civilian volunteers and cooks showed up to make Coal Creek Health Days successful!

It took a lot of planning and organization to pull it off.  We learned what a massive job it is for the Remote Area Medical personnel to bring their trailer loads of equipment and supplies to set it all up and then pack it all back up.  This is no simple feat!

Thanks to Dr. Hiroshi Toyohara, Cardiothoracic Surgeon who worked for East Tennessee Cardiovascular Surgeons Group and is now retired, for recruiting his buddies and colleagues.  He took valuable time away from fly fishing on the Clinch River to take on this project personally.  We had some of the most highly skilled medical staff show up to provide these needed services.

On Friday, October 26, 2001, the gymnasium was turned in to a giant dental office.   The Briceville People's Clinic was cleaned up and reopened for the two days.  The students at Briceville School were provided medical exams and dental services.  The value of these services was over $17,000.  The services were also offered to the entire Coal Creek community on Saturday, October 27.

Knoxville's NBC affiliate Channel 10 WBIR "Live at Five" sent reporter Nicole Henrich and cameraman Brian New.  They did a great segment on the day and really boosted the confidence of the kids.

TVA and volunteers from Clinch River Chapter of Trout Unlimited treated the kids to creek exploration between doctor and dental visits.  Thanks to Charlie Saylor and Julie Tindell from TVA and Lynn, Dale, and Brian Bostic from Trout Unlimited.
