(PART OF LAKE CITY’S COAL CREEK MINERS’ FESTIVAL)

On Saturday, May 17th, from 12:00 Noon to 2:00 p.m., the Coal Creek Watershed Foundation will open the site of historic Militia Hill to the public as part of Lake City’s Coal Creek Miners’ Festival being held that day.  CCWF has plans to restore the historic site and have it open year round as one of the sites that will preserve the rich Coal Creek mining history.

The Militia Hill site (made famous as the site of Fort Anderson during the Coal Creek War of 1891—1892) will be open for two hours.  Anderson County High School students participating in the Coal Creek Scholars program will act as tour guides.

Signs will be posted along Highway 116 from Lake City to Vowell Mountain.  Parking is available along the roads. Visitors must sign a release form before entering the property.

A map showing the site location in relation to Lake City can be found at http://www.coalcreekaml.com/MapMilitia.htm

If traveling from Knoxville, take I-75 North to exit 128 at Lake City.  From Exit 128 ramp, turn right on Norris Freeway.  Go to the first traffic light and turn left on Highway 25W.  At the traffic light past Lake City Library and Community Center (ShopRite grocery store is on right), turn right at the light onto Highway 116 toward Briceville.  Follow Highway 116 for 0.6 miles and turn right onto Beech Grove Lane.  Go one block and turn left onto Sharp Lane and then one block and turn right on Vowell Mountain Road.  Follow signs to Militia Hill.
